Our approach to ground risk

Ground conditions are the largest single source of cost overrun on infrastructure projects, and they are also the cheapest risk to retire early. We front-load investigation rather than deferring it: boreholes and test pits, in-situ testing, and laboratory classification come before any foundation geometry is fixed. Where conditions vary along a corridor or across a site, we design to the envelope of what the ground actually does rather than to an averaged value that exists nowhere on the alignment.

That discipline continues through construction. Compaction control on earthworks, aggregate and concrete verification on pavement structures, and internal control of works keep the as-built condition aligned with the design assumption. Because our geotechnical team also carries out the foundation design for transmission structures, differing site conditions get resolved in days rather than escalating through a chain of subcontractors.

What does a geotechnical investigation actually include?

A typical scope covers desk study and review of existing data, a field programme of boreholes, test pits and in-situ testing sized to the structure and the variability of the ground, laboratory classification and strength testing, then a report that converts the findings into design parameters. The deliverable engineers care about is not the borehole log but the defensible set of parameters that follows from it.

Do you design foundations for structures other than buildings?

Yes. Foundation design for lattice towers, steel poles and wood poles is handled by the same in-house team, which is why it appears on both this page and our transmission and distribution engineering page rather than being subcontracted out.

Can you supervise construction as well as design it?

Construction supervision and internal control of works are part of our standard offering, and our supervision engagements in Canada, Chad and Cameroon have recorded zero lost time incidents. Quality and safety oversight is described in more detail under quality, health, safety and environment.
